Turning Sloe By-products into Sustainability: Our Partnership with Crowders Nursery

At Louth Distillery, sustainability is at the heart of what we do. As producers of handcrafted gin, we’re constantly thinking about minimizing waste and making our processes more eco-friendly. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce an exciting new partnership with Crowders Nursery in Horncastle to explore an innovative way to give new life to one of our by-products: sloe berries.

For the past two years, we have steeped sloe berries to create our sell-out sloe gin, infusing the berries’ rich, fruity flavour into the spirit. Once the steeping process is complete, we’re left with a significant amount of berry by-product. We were approached by Crowders Nursery, saw an opportunity to turn it into something productive, instead of discarding it.

We’ve donated our leftover sloe by-product to Crowders Nursery, where they’ll be conducting tests to see if the seeds from the berries can be planted and grown into sloe trees. It’s a unique experiment that could turn what was once waste into a valuable resource.

Sustainable Innovation: Growing Trees from By-products

This collaboration with Crowders Nursery aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainability. By finding a new use for the sloe seeds, we’re not only reducing waste but also contributing to a project that could benefit the environment. If the tests are successful, the seeds could eventually be used to grow new sloe trees right here in Lincolnshire, further supporting biodiversity in the region.

Crowders Nursery is leading the way in this seed trial, and we’re excited to see the results by next spring. If successful, this could be the start of a larger initiative where other botanicals used in distilling or food production processes could be repurposed in similar ways.

Looking Ahead

This project represents more than just a partnership—it’s a step forward in how industries can work together to find sustainable solutions. At Louth Distillery, we’re proud to be part of this journey with Crowders Nursery, and we can’t wait to see if these sloe seeds will take root.

We’ll be sharing updates on the progress of the seed trials over the coming months, so stay tuned for more as we continue to work towards making our gin production process even greener!
